Niambi Binta George

Niambi Binta George, beloved daughter of Joan P. George and the late Emil C. George, passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 46. From 1983 to 1990, she attended St. Margaret’s Nursery School in Georgetown, Guyana, along with Goodwill Primary School and the Convent Prep School in Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica, before being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10. During her treatment, Niambi continued her education at Ft. Lincoln Elementary School and later at The Lab School of Washington. She went on to graduate from Roosevelt High School in June 1997, where she received the Congressional Special Recognition Award from Congresswoman Eleanor H. Norton of the District of Columbia. Niambi was an artist at heart, with a deep appreciation for many genres of music. Among her favorite artists were Bob Marley, UB40, and Prince, though she held a special love for Michael Jackson—even if she never quite mastered the moonwalk. Her creativity extended beyond music into the culinary arts. In 2001, she enrolled in the Metropolitan Culinary Arts Institute in Arlington, Virginia, where she pursued her passion for cooking. Although she was forced to leave due to health challenges related to her cancer and treatments, her artistic spirit remained alive and undiminished. She soon found another outlet in working with clay and channeled her creativity into crafting handmade pots. Through this medium, Niambi expressed both her resilience and her love for creating beauty, though she was eventually compelled to step away from pottery as her illness worsened. Niambi’s life was marked by numerous challenges which she faced with courage. At the age of 10, she was diagnosed with medulloblastoma and underwent brain surgery, as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatments. In 2002, she began experiencing seizures, adding to the difficulties she faced. Despite these obstacles, Niambi remained remarkably brave and determined. She graduated from high school and went on to attend one year of college. Over time, she became wheelchair-bound, yet continued to persevere with strength and grace. In 2019, she faced another diagnosis of breast cancer and met it with the same resilience that defined her life. Last year, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her bones, a challenge she faced with unwavering grace before passing away peacefully. Niambi was the sister of Bediako George, Soyini George (deceased), and Dr. Damali Martin; half -sister of Patsy George and Carlton George, Sister-in-law of Dr. MaryEllen McGuire, Julien Martin and Yumiko George. She is survived by her great aunt Mrs. Dorothy Norton of Georgetown, Guyana. She was the niece of Roy Martin (deceased) and Norma Martin, Alan Stancil (deceased) and Joy Stancil, Dr. Neville and Bridget Martin, Dr. Keith and Camille Martin and Conrad and Laurel Martin. She is loved by her nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous other relatives and friends.
